What's Inside a Piano?

Nadia pronounced the piano action "Impressive!"

"That kinda looks like a hammer!"

When we pulled the action out of my 1888 Steinway to start its renovation, I decided to leave it out for all my students to see and experiment with at their lessons this week.

After Iliana and Sabine figured out that the little hammers went up and hit things, they were stymied.

"What do you think they hit?" I inquired.

"I don't know, bells?" Sabine offered.

Next it was Nadia's turn. Watch as she investigates the inner workings of a grand piano.
